Phares B. “Pete” Witmer III, age 76 of Greencastle, PA died at 10:25 PM on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in his home following a seven month illness.

Born July 26, 1940 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late Phares B. Witmer II and Helen (Eckstine) Witmer. He married M. Kay (Overcash) Witmer on October 4, 1962.

Phares retired from Mack Truck of Hagerstown where he worked in quality control. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle where he had served on church council. He enjoyed the outdoors and his interests included hunting, fishing and archery. At the age of 14, he was the Pennsylvania State Junior Champion in the longbow.

Phares was a 1958 graduate of Greencastle High School and had attended Penn State at the  York Campus.

Surviving family in addition to his wife of nearly 54 years are two daughters Dawn Boscolo and husband Marty of Greencastle, Robin Witmer-Kline and husband Michael of Greencastle, two granddaughters, Blair Boscolo and Grace Boscolo both of Greencastle, two brothers, Douglas Witmer of Greencastle, Shawn Witmer of Waynesboro, PA, three sisters, Terry Tritle of Chambersburg, Virginia Miller of Mercersburg and Barbara McNew of Chambersburg.

Funeral services will be held on Monday September 19 at 10:30 AM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church 130 N. Washington St. Greencastle with Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. There will be no public viewing but the family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Evangelical Lutheran Church 130 N.
