Ida Jo (Witmer) Martin

Ida Josephine (Witmer) Martin, age 95 of Ontario Dr. Hagerstown, MD died Thursday, morning January 12, 2017 in the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

Born January 24, 1921 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Phares B. and Martha (Eshleman) Witmer. She married her husband J. Allen Martin on August 13, 1939 in the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church near Greencastle. He died on March 20, 2008.

Ida Jo was a homemaker and had worked as the Nutrition Project Director for the Washington County Commission on Aging. She was a member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church and had taught Sunday School for the Berean Class.

She traveled with her husband, who was then employed by the Washington County Board of Education, to serve in the country of Nigeria for two years.

Ida Jo graduated from the Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, VA. She enjoyed hiking, sewing, did lots of reading and was very interested in the affiars of Israel.

Surviving family are two daughters, Lynette Fredrick of Germantown, MD, Jeannie Martin of Hagerstown, one brother Clayton E. Witmer of Daytona, FL, several nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters Elizabeth Martin, Catherine Baer and two brothers Raymond Witmer and Lester Witmer.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 17 at 1:00 PM at the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church 13343 Williamsport Pike Greencastle with Pastor Dennis Stutzman officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com.
