William Schnabel Obituary

William E. “Bill” Schnabel, age 75, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born September 7, 1948, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late William and Pauline Snyder Schnabel.

Bill was a 1966 graduate of CASHS. A proud Marine, Bill went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He served in and during the Vietnam Conflict, where he earned the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal w/1*, and Vietnamese Campaign Medal w/device. After Bill’s service, he went to work for Knouse Foods for over 30 years, retiring as a Warehouse Supervisor in 2002. Bill was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both in Greencastle, PA. He volunteered as an assistant baseball coach for his son’s teams and along with his wife, Ann, started a youth soccer program in the 1980’s with the assistance of the local men’s soccer team and many dedicated fathers. They also had a successful indoor soccer program during the winter.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Ann Martin Schnabel, whom he married on June 30, 1973; two sons, Erik W. Schnabel (Terry Luna) of Oakland, CA and David L. Schnabel (Jenae) of Boonsboro, MD; two grandchildren, Brooklyn and Braxton Schnabel; and a sister, Bonnie Smetts (Robert) of FL.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 11 AM in Salem Lutheran Church, 99 Miller St., Chambersburg, PA, where Pastor Barbara Barry will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the above church and address. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery, where military honors will be rendered. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., Greencastle, PA.
