Robert Shreiner Obituary

Robert (Bob) Shreiner departed his earthly home Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Laurel Lakes Rehabilitation & Wellness Center, Chambersburg, PA.

Bob and his twin brother, Dick (Richard), were born at the Chambersburg Hospital. Dick was ten minutes older than Bob. They graduated in 1947 from Chambersburg High School. After graduation Bob began working on his trade papers at Chambersburg Engineering Company (CECO). On November 1, 1947 Dick and Bob joined the Navy. This was the first time the brothers were separated. Bob was an Aviation Metal Smith & Hydraulics Sailor. He served aboard the USS Boxer, USS Sicily and USS Curtis. Bob proudly served during the Korean Conflict and was an Atomic Veteran during Operation Green House. He witnessed and transported scientists to Bikini Atoll prior-to and following atomic detonations. Bob was honorably discharged in 1952 at the rank of AM3.

After discharge, he returned to CECO where he retired after 30+ years. After CECO retirement, Bob worked an additional 10 years and retired from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, MD. Bob also worked with Blaine's Window and Hardware doing tool & dye work until he was 80 years old. He loved his work.

Bob served 24 years on the Chambersburg Area School Board, 20 years with Franklin County Career & Technology Center and 20 years on the Chambersburg Recreation Board. He also served on council and was treasurer for Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was an active member of New Franklin Ruritan Club, VFW and American Legion, all in Chambersburg.

Baseball was Bob's passion in his younger years. He played for the Twilight League Baseball Teams but his time with the New Franklin "Bandits" was his true love. He and several members were outstanding at stealing bases. This is where the name "Bandits" originated.

Bob is survived by his wife, Ina (Reichard) Shreiner, son Curtis L Shreiner, St Thomas, PA, daughter Amy E. (Mark P.) Mata of Huntsville, AL, and sister Doris S.
