Larry Denton Byers, age 74, a resident of the Martinsburg VA Medical Center (VAMC) and formerly of State Line, PA, died Wednesday evening April 7, 2021, at the Martinsburg VAMC, Martinsburg, WV.
Born September 20, 1946, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late John Franklin and Clara (Stine) Byers.
Larry retired from Mack Trucks of Hagerstown, MD. He was a 1964, graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. Larry was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He served in the Army from Dec. 1965 – Oct. 1968, as a Helicopter Crew Chief and Door Gunner. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal.
Larry had been a member of the former Trinity United Brethren Church in State Line, PA, and the Otterbein United Brethren Church of Greencastle, PA. He was a member of the Greencastle V.F.W., Greencastle American Legion, and Funkstown American Legion. His hobbies and interests included going to auctions, collecting antiques, wood working; also, hunting and fishing with his life-long best buddy, Jeff Barnes, of Hancock, MD.
Surviving family are two daughters, Starla Crist (Jason) of Hagerstown, MD, Tammy Anderson (Peter) of Boonsboro, MD; four grandchildren, Carlie Anderson, Braden Anderson, Kelsie Byers, Katlyn Davis; two great-grandchildren, Orion Spencer, Reign Spencer; sister-in-law JoAnn E. Byers, of Hagerstown, MD; nephew, Rodney E. Byers and niece, Crystal A. Hoch, both of Greencastle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys C. Robinson, and a brother, Richard F. Byers.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 15, at 10:30 AM at the Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line, MD, with Pastor Jay Recto officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, PA. Graveside military honors will be provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to Martinsburg VAMC Voluntary Services, 510 Butler Ave. Martinsburg, WV 25405, with check memo line noting, “In remembrance of Larry Byers”.
