John E. Kinney

John E. Kinney, age 103, a longtime resident of Greencastle, PA died Friday morning April 30, 2021    at Providence Place of Chambersburg.

Born October 25, 1917 in Turtlepoint, McKean County, PA, he was the son of the late Fred C. and Esther (Seyler) Kinney. He graduated from Port Allegany High School in 1936 and was a 1940 graduate of Penn State University.

John served two tours of duty during World War II as a bomber pilot, one with the 6th Air Force on submarine patrol in the West Indies and one with the 8th Air Force in Europe.
He married his wife Helen Jane (Ewing) Kinney on November 21, 1942 in Blytheville, AR. She died on May 31, 2009. 

He worked as a technical writer in the aviation industry including Fairchild. John was active in Scouting for 79 years, serving as scoutmaster for 23 years. He served on the Greencastle-Antrim School Board for 18 years, 4 years as President. John also was an active member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, Shady Grove Ruritan, Mt. Pisgah Masonic Lodge No. #443 of Greencastle and the Blue Bird Society of PA.

Surviving family are two sons, J. Ross Kinney of Dummerston, VT, Jay S. Kinney of South Bend IN; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers Robert F.  Kinney of Port Allegany, PA and James Kinney of Warren, PA

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter Susan Jane Martin, a brother Orton Kinney and a sister Belle Ball.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 4 at 11:00 AM from the Greencastle Presbyterian Church 57 West Baltimore St. Greencastle with Rev. Dr. Robert Cook officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg VFW Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle and at the church one hour before the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to Boy Scout Troop # 99 C/O Jerry Harness, 2434 Pikeside Dr. Greencastle, PA. 17225.
