John L. “Bud” Baer

John L. “Bud” Baer, age 85 of Waynesboro, PA died Sunday afternoon January 27, 2019 in the UPMC Pinnacle Hospital in Harrisburg, PA following complications of congestive heart failure.

Born January 11, 1934 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Daniel “Vic” and Evelyn (Diehl) Baer. He and his wife of nearly 64 years, E. Ruth (Harbaugh) Baer, were married on February 4, 1955.

Bud retired in 1987 after 26 years at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, MD. Prior to that he served as a police officer in Waynesboro, and a machinist at the Waynesboro Auto Parts. Bud served 3 years active duty in the US Army during the Korean War and then retired as a Major from the Army National Guard.

Bud was a former member of the Acacia Masonic Lodge No. 586 of Waynesboro, member of the Waynesboro American Legion and life member of the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association. He also was a member of the Shady Grove Ruritan Club and the Rangers and Frontiersman Hunting Clubs in Potter County, PA.

Bud’s interests and hobbies included hunting, fishing, reading, gunsmithing and travel, with his favorite location being Glacier National Park in Canada.  He was a lifelong accomplished mechanic and eagerly passed his talents and skills to his sons and grandsons.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are one daughter Linda Vrboncic and husband Rich of Pittsburgh, PA; three sons, Mike Baer and wife Penne of Frederick, MD, Tim Baer and wife Dana of Greencastle, PA, Todd Baer and wife Kendra of Hagerstown, MD; seven grandchildren, Jason Vrboncic, David Baer, Jonathan Baer, Tyler Baer, Katie Baer, Indy Baer, Sophie Baer; one brother Joseph Baer of Shippensburg, PA; two sisters, Bernice Berger of Waynesboro, PA, Jane Winters of Greencastle and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Maxine “Susie” Wolfinger and a brother Jackie A. Baer Sr.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 2 at 3:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Pastor Joe Baer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and on Saturday one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to   St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Salvation Army 159 Lincoln Way West Chambersburg, PA 17201.
