Harold Franklin Nelson, Jr.

Harold Franklin Nelson, Jr., age 79, of Greencastle, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, MD. Born December 29, 1942 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Harold F. Nelson, Sr. and Ida Mae Ford Nelson and step-father George Benedum.

Mr. Nelson was a 1944 graduate of Bristol High School in Bristol, WV, where he was “King of Bristol High School”. He worked as a machinist at the former Mack Truck in Hagerstown, MD for over 40 years. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Waynesboro VFW, UAW Local #171, and the Bear Creek Camp in Elk Co., PA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with family, watching Greencastle Midget Football, watching his grandchildren play sports, NASCAR, the Packers, and the Yankees.

Surviving are four children, Jeff Smith (wife Cheryl) of Greencastle, PA, Mike Nelson (wife Debra) of Greencastle, PA, Steve Nelson (wife Sherrie) of Greencastle, PA, and Paul Nelson (wife Angie) of Chambersburg, PA; six grandchildren, Courtney Smith, Travis Smith (wife Casie), Michaela Nelson, Sarah Miranda, Amber Nelson, and Cory Nelson (wife Katie); eight great-grandchildren; and a step-sister, Carla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Nelson in March 2022.

 Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 1 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 8, 2022, from 6-8 PM, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Rd., Waynesboro, PA 17268. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
