Betty J. (Stottlemyer) Witmer

Betty J. Witmer, 85, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 3, 1937 in Hagerstown, MD, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Sarah Bartles Stottlemyer. Her beloved husband, Clarence V. Witmer, preceded her in death on May 27, 2021.

Betty enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother, caring for and watching her children grow up. She cared for her mentally handicapped son Lonie at home for 50 years. She also took in and cared for several foster children. Betty enjoyed music, reading, sewing and traveling. While her children were at home they sang as a family in church. For many years afterward, Clarence and Betty sang duets. Betty taught Sunday school for 60 years and served as the church organist for many years. She did volunteer work at World Treasures, Shalom Christian Academy, Cumberland Valley Relief Center and the church sewing circle.

She is survived by four daughters Sylvia Clement (Sam) of Greencastle, Christine Henry (Randy) of Hagerstown, Marjorie Lehman (Michael) of Lancaster, PA, Vicki Crider (Brent) of Sarasota, FL; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Mary Cameron of Muscle Shoals, AL, and Roger Stottlemyer of Hagerstown, MD. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her son Lonie R. Witmer, great grandson, Enoch Crider; and three siblings, Dorothy Williar, Paul Stottlemyer and Robert Stottlemyer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, 13343 Williamsport Pike, Greencastle, with Pastor Gary Zook officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, on Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and at the church one hour before the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Cumberland Valley Relief Center 4225 Molly Pitcher Hwy. Chambersburg, PA 17202.
