Betty L. (Elliott) Barnhart

Betty L. Barnhart, 92, of Chambersburg, died on Friday, June 18, 2021.   She lived for the last two years at the Philadelphia Protestant Home. 

Born on July 7, 1928 in Welsh Run, Franklin County, PA,  she was the daughter of the late Samuel D. and Hazel (Smith) Elliott.

In her earlier life, she worked at Fairchild Aircraft Co., Hagerstown, MD and later part-time at Barton’s Cookie Jar on Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg. Her primary work, though, was as a consummate homemaker and caregiver.

She was an active member of the Sunshine Class at King Street United Brethren Church of Chambersburg since 1954 and was a founding member of the Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club in 1979.

She and her husband, Charles H. Barnhart, were married June 6, 1954, in State Line, PA.  He died March 13, 1999. 

Surviving family are: daughter Carolyn E. Cohen of Philadelphia, and grandson David B. A. Cohen of Portland, OR. She is also survived by sister-in-law Joan Barnhart, a niece and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by grandson, Andrew E. Cohen, brother Nelson M. Elliott, sisters Dorothy M. Degraff and Kathleen Elliott.

The service will be held at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 24.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home the night before from 6 PM-8 PM and one hour before the service.  Burial will be at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
