Robert Eugene “Bob” Barnes, age 78 of Chambersburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly at York Hospital on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Born in Waynesboro, PA on October 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Raymond William and Jennie Naomi Stoner Barnes.
Bob was a 1963 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School. A U. S. Army veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart, Bob served honorably during the Vietnam conflict, from 1968-1970 and served in country from 1968-1969. Bob worked as a machinist at the former Landis Tool Company after High School and then Caterpillar and Mack, where he retired. Bob was the owner and operator of Barnes Sunoco Station in Greencastle for 7 years. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6319 in Greencastle and the DAV. He enjoyed motorcycles, detailing cars, going to car shows, his cigars, and family gatherings.
Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Pamela Kesselring Barnes whom he married on November 22, 1971; two children, April M. Eberly (husband Rodney) of Greencastle, PA and Alan R. Barnes (wife Katie) of Chambersburg, PA; two grandsons, Seth and Tate Eberly; and two sisters, Nancy Henry and Karen Barnes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, R. William “Bill” Barnes.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, from 6 – 8 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225. Memorial services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Operation Save A Vet, Save a Pet, c/o Franklin County Veteran Affairs, 425 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
