Richard S. Gardenhour, 81, of Greencastle, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, MD. Born July 31, 1943, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Stanley and Sylvia Welty Gardenhour.
Richard was a 1961 graduate of Waynesboro High School. A US Army veteran, he served honorably in the Vietnam War. Early in his life he was employed at Fairchild in Hagerstown. He was later employed as a technician with Mack Truck for 30 years until his retirement. Richard was a life member of VFW Post 695 in Waynesboro and American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown. He was also a member of the Rouzerville Lions Club and Trinity Lutheran Church in Greencastle. He and his wife enjoyed camping and spending time in Frostproof, FL where they were associate members of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Seabring, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan L. Bruderer Gardenhour, whom he married on June 1, 1980; two children, Jeffrey and Tricia; step-daughter, Sharleen Valentine of CA; and two grandchildren. Aside from his parents, Richard was preceded in death by two infant children and his sister D. Jean Biesecker.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro, PA. Rev. Denise Horn will officiate. Military graveside honors will be provided by members of the VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg, PA. The family would like to extend a warm thank you to friends, family and neighbors who have shown them support and been a great comfort to them. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M.
