Richard Franklin Byers
Richard Franklin Byers, age 86, of Hagerstown, MD died early Saturday morning December 16, 2017 in Doey’s House of Hagerstown following complications of a fall he suffered earlier in December.
Born October 7, 1931 in State Line, PA, he was the son of the late John Franklin and Clara (Stine) Byers. He married JoAnn E. (Shank) Byers on December 27, 1956.
Richard worked as an airline mechanic for Capital and United Airlines for 41 ½ years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force; where he was a staff sergeant serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Hagerstown and a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373 of Greencastle. He attended school in State Line and Greencastle.
Richard enjoyed living on his family farm and he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and had made many friends over the years.
Surviving family in addition to his loving wife of 61 years JoAnn of Hagerstown are: one son Rodney E. Byers of Greencastle, PA, one daughter Crystal A. Hoch and husband Kenneth of Greencastle, PA, five grandchildren, Angel, Diamond, Eugene, Seth, Sean, one great-granddaughter Isabella Rose, one brother Larry D. Byers, a resident of the VA Center in Martinsburg, WV, numerous nieces and nephews and his golden retriever Megan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Gladys Robinson.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Beautiful View Cemetery State Line with Rev. Jake Caldwell and Rev. Richard Kroll officiating. Military honors will be provided at the graveside by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard. There will be a viewing for family and friends on Thursday December 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the First Christian Church of Hagerstown 1345 Potomac Ave. Hagerstown, MD 27142 or to the Beautiful View Cemetery Inc. c/o Margaret Maietta P.O Box 454 State Line, PA 17263 or to Hospice of Washington County 747 Northern Ave. Hagerstown, MD 21742.
