Mary J. Witmer
Mary J. (Shipley) Witmer, age 81 of Chambersburg, PA died at 6:03 PM Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born February 11, 1937 in St. Thomas Twp. Franklin County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Guy W. and Esther (Keefer) Shipley. She married her husband Robert D. Witmer Sr. on January 1, 1960.
Mary was a longtime homemaker and had worked at the former Stanley Co. of Chambersburg. She, “Nanny Witmer” baby sat many children over the years in her home. She was a 1955 graduate of Chambersburg High School and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Greencastle American Legion.
Mary’s interests included camping, bingo and doing cross word puzzles. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and enjoyed meeting people everywhere she went.
Surviving family in addition to her husband of 58 years are five sons, Robert D. Witmer Jr. and partner Nancy of Mercersburg, Wynne W. Witmer and wife Tina of Greencastle, Sanford K. Witmer and wife Donna of Chambersburg, Paul D. Witmer and wife Brenda of Greencastle, Philip L. Witmer and wife Pamela of Greencastle, one daughter, Mary Esther Kline and husband Gene of Hagerstown, MD, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, four brothers, William Shipley of Chambersburg, Donald Shipley of Ft. Loudon, PA, Richard Shipley of Rouzerville, PA, Alvin Shipley of Edenville, PA, three sisters, Freda Weirich of La Plata, MD, Susan Haynes of Georgia and Daisy Arrison of Orrtanna, PA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother Boyd Shipley, a daughter-in-law Brenda K. Witmer and a brother-in-law Leonard Witmer Sr.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 8 at 11:00 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Pastor Nelson Witmer officiating. Burial will be in the Shanks Church Cemetery near Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 PM and one hour before the service on Thursday.
