Mary Louise Hykes Spangler, age 84 of Greencastle, PA went home to be with her Lord and Savior on
Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 9, 1938, in Chambersburg, PA, she was
the daughter of the late Joseph Truman and Mabel Stouffer Miller.
Mrs. Spangler was a 1957 graduate of the James Buchanan High School and a 1959 graduate of Nursing
School. She worked as a nurse at Waynesboro Hospital for many years, retiring in 1984. She was a
former member of Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, the Franklin County Homemakers, Franklin
County Farm Women, and had formerly participated in 4-H, showing Beef Cattle. She enjoyed square
dancing with the Gadabouts, travel, RVing, and taking trips overseas.
She is survived by her husband, George Spangler of Greencastle, PA; three children, Rebecca “Denise”
Peterson (husband Doulas, Sr.) of Mercersburg, PA, Michael E. Hykes (wife Michelle) of Greencastle, PA,
and Jennifer A. Spangler (husband David) of Greencastle, PA; three step-children, Susan Myers (husband
Rev. Dwight) of Manheim, PA, Ellen Fritz of Greencastle, PA, and David Spangler (wife Jennifer) of
Greencastle, PA; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Richard Miller (wife Fern) of
Greencastle, PA and Darlene Ball of Mercersburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to
her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jacob Owen Hykes in 2003, brother, J.
Donald Miller, and grandson, Blaine Ammons.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023, at 2 PM at Montgomery Brethren in Christ
Church, 6727 Montgomery Church Rd., Mercersburg, PA 17236, where Pastor Jepheth Nell will officiate.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 6 – 8 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman
and Son Funeral Home, Inc. 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225 and on Monday one hour prior to
the service at the above church and address. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association,
www.alz.org , Camp Joy El, www.joyelcamps.org, or Rhodes Grove Camp, www.rhodesgrove.com.
