Judith Mae Hykes, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Homewood Health Care Center, Williamsport, MD. Born on June 13, 1930, in Huntingdon, PA, she was the daughter of the late Lester G. and Edna V. Hawn Querry.
Judy was a 1948 graduate of Hagerstown High School and a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown Community College where she attended on a scholarship from the 1948 Miss Hagerstown Contest. Her family moved from Huntingdon to Hagerstown in 1942 when her father began working for the former Fairchild Industries. She married her first husband, Richard Marsh in 1950. She and Dick’s first jobs led them to Bristol, PA, Philadelphia, and later to Levittown, PA. New jobs eventually led them to Gaithersburg, MD and then back to Greencastle, PA in 1970 to be closer to family. Judy continued to commute to Gaithersburg for work as an Administrative Assistant. She was proficient in shorthand, dictation, and typing.
In 1981, she married her second husband, John Hykes of Greencastle, PA. Tired of commuting, she took a position in the Chambersburg Office of the Pennsylvania Unemployment Agency, where she retired in 1991. After retirement, she worked as a Stanley Saleslady until 2014. Judy and John moved in 2014 to a cottage at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, PA. Judy was a member of Macedonia United Brethren Church. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and Bible Study.
Surviving are sisters, Mary H. Spidle of Funkstown, MD and Virginia A. Fennel (husband Robert) of Hagerstown, MD; brother, Lester R. Querry (wife Marty) of Bluemont, VA; many special nieces, nephews, and special friends Florence Dinsmore, Kathy Weller, and Donna Schindel. In addition to her parents,she was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard “Dick” Marsh and her second husband, John Hykes.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 11 AM in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Gayle Ruble, Sr. will officiate. The Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225 will be open on Monday, May 19, 2025, from 4 – 6 PM for friends who wish to visit.
The family would like to thank the staff at Homewood Health Care Center in Williamsport, MD, for their excellent care of Judy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hagerstown Community College Foundation, Scholarship Fund, 11400 Robinwood Dr., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
