Joseph C. Copenhaver

Joseph Carl Copenhaver, age 84 of Greencastle, PA, died Thursday, August 3, 2017, at his home after a battle with cancer.

Joseph (Joe) was born on September 24, 1932, in Greencastle, PA and was the son of the late Joseph Henry Copenhaver and Vada May (Goetz) Copenhaver.

Joe owned and operated the former CMC Insurance and Copenhaver Real Estate in Greencastle.  After his retirement, he worked at the Greencastle Greens Golf Club.

During his life, Joe was a member and past president of the Greencastle Lions Club, a board member and past president of the Band Boosters Association, a board member and past president of the Greencastle –Antrim School Board, a member and former president of the Lincoln Intermediate Unit of Franklin, Adams, and York Counties, a board member and former president of the Greencastle Quarterback Club where he was instrumental in obtaining the original lighting for Kaley Field.  He was also a social member of the Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post #6319 of Greencastle, a 52 year post member of the Greencastle American Legion, and was a past president of the Franklin County Area Development Corp.

He graduated from Greencastle High School in 1950. Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps in February, 1951.  While in the Marines he served as a sergeant of various companies in the 2 nd combat services and was promoted to sergeant major of the battalion and then first sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1954.

Joe was one of the original Little League managers when the Little League was founded in Greencastle.  He moved on to one of the original Pony League managers his second year and managed the Cardinals for seven years.  He later served as President of the Pony League.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ of Greencastle. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed taking his family to Disney World over the years.  He also enjoyed golfing, reading and was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

Surviving family are his wife of 61 years, Nancy Lee (Koons) Copenhaver, one daughter, Kelly Copenhaver Lanahan and her husband  Rob of Towson, MD,  one son, Kevin Copenhaver and his wife Lisa of Greencastle, and three grandchildren, Bryce Lanahan, Emily and Matthew Copenhaver and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Ann (Sellers) Copenhaver, his parents, and his sister, Iona (Copenhaver) Bittner.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 8 at 10:00 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Pastors Richard Overcash and Brenda Clark officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg  V.F.W.  Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice 2700 Luther Dr. Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation 909 N.
