John William "Bill" Thomas

John William Thomas, Jr., age 91, of Greencastle, PA, passed away at his home, where he lived for over 59 years on Friday, August 7, 2026. Born March 13, 1935, in Washington County, MD, he was the son of the late John W. Thomas and Hazel Turner Thomas Binkley.

Mr. Thomas served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1953-1955. He worked at the former Grove Worldwide in shipping and receiving for 36 years, retiring in 1998. In retirement, Bill continued his side gig of painting for over 60 years. No job was too small or too large as he had a passion for painting, which often resulted in no charges for his work. Bill was a member of Macedonia United Brethren Church and the Greencastle Sportsman’s Association. He loved to hunt and fish. His other hobbies included bowling and playing softball until the age of 60. Bill was a good man who loved God and his family. He cherished time with his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at family picnics.

Bill is survived by his wife of 70 years, Naomi Florence Thomas, whom he married on March 31, 1956, at United Brethren Parsonage in Hagerstown, MD; three sons, David Thomas (Bonnie Gordon), John Thomas, Jr. (Tammy Lowans), and Richard “Rick” Thomas (Tressy) all of Greencastle, PA; eight grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael; two granddaughters, Dustie and Elisha; and four siblings, Cornelia Lindsay, Betty Minnich, and Edward and Robert Thomas.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 1 PM at Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worley town Rd., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Pastors Brian Black and Gayle Ruble will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will follow the service in the adjacent church cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address.
