John L. Buchanan, age 85, of Greencastle, PA, joined his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 9, 2018, at his home, surrounded by family and love. Born in Worleytown, PA on August 31, 1933, he was the son of the late Joseph Raymond and Alice Burkett Buchanan.
A 1953 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, Mr. Buchanan continued his education, earning his undergraduate degree from Shippensburg State College and later his Masters of Education from University of North Carolina in 1963. Mr. Buchanan was a Professor at Towson University for 29 years, retiring in 1999. John was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church, Greencastle, PA; he served on the Board of Director’s for the Martin’s Mill Bridge Renovation and had helped his wife with the Conococheague Institute in Welsh Run. An avid collector, John enjoyed antiques, farming, working, and serving the community in various volunteer rolls. A faithful man, John had joined his church on several mission trips through the years.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 59 years, Gay Houpt Buchanan, whom he married in 1959; four children, J. Mark Buchanan (wife Sophie) of Upper Strasburg, PA, Joel A. Buchanan (Julie Cassidy) of Shippensburg, PA, Stephen M. Buchanan (wife Martha) of Greencastle, PA and Heather A. Buchanan of Greencastle, PA; 11 grandchildren, Cameron James, James Connor Reed, Kiefer Elliott, Joshua Paul, Miranda Ellen, Madison Faith, Kathryn Grace, Molly Heaven, Megan Elizabeth, Emily Jane, and Becca Leigh; three great-grandchildren, Roman Quiller, Luna Seraphina, and Sebastiano Osvaldo; and a sister, Nellie McIntosh of Greencastle, PA.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 11 AM at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle, PA, 17225, where Pastor David Rawley will officiate. Friends and family are welcome to gather for visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, PA.
