Verda F. Rhodes

Verda F. Rhodes, age 94, of Mercersburg, PA and formerly of Upton, PA, passed away at the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center on Monday, September 3, 2018. Born February 3, 1924 in Greencastle, PA, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Anna Copenhaver Foreman.

Mrs. Rhodes worked at Wilson College in her early years, during WWII and then on to the former Fairchild Industries and Landis Tool Company. She retired after a number of years as the Manager of Farmers Union Co-Op, Greencastle, PA. She was a lifetime member of St. Stevens U.C.C., St. Thomas American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the former VFW Mercersburg, PA. Mrs. Rhodes enjoyed gardening, feeding wildlife, especially the squirrels, watching birds, traveling, reading, attending family sporting events, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, and going to the Libraries in Greencastle and Mercersburg.

Surviving are two sons, Robert W. Rhodes III (wife Mary) of Mercersburg, PA and Carrol P. Rhodes (wife Victoria) of Mercersburg, PA; a granddaughter, Erin Michelle Rhodes of Greencastle, PA; a great-granddaughter, River Varron of Greencastle, PA;  a sister, Joyce Malone (husband John) of Chambersburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Rhodes, Jr., a granddaughter, Teri L. Rhodes, three sisters, one brother, and three half-sisters.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 2 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Rev. Harold Posey will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Fendrick Library, 20 North Main St., Mercersburg, PA 17236.
