Ruth Ellen (Ludy) Rinehart

Ruth Ellen (Ludy) Rinehart, age 94  of Greencastle, PA passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018  at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.

Born May 1, 1924 in Gapland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd C. and Icie Ellen (Smith) Ludy.

Ruth was a homemaker and a registered nurse having worked at the former Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV and last at the Western Maryland Hospital in Hagerstown, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church for 55 years, a former member of the Rescue Hose Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Washington County School of Nursing Alumni Association. Ruth served as a nurse with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile for 55 years, and served as a Girl Scout and Brownie Scout leader.  She was a charter member of the former Blue Ridge Lace Guild.

Ruth was a 1942 graduate of Middletown, MD High School, 1945 graduate of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing and served in the Cadet Nursing Corps during World War II. Her hobbies include tatting and sewing.  She was an active member of the community and will be greatly missed by those that she cared for throughout her lifetime.

Surviving family are seven daughters, J. Ellen (Allen) Scott of Waynesboro, PA, Frances R. (Jeffrey) Cordell of Greencastle, Ruth Ann R. (Michael) Adams of Pittsburgh, PA, Margaret E. (Harold) Ayres of Ambler, PA, Helen R. Keckler of Waynesboro, PA, Susan R. (John) McKinnis of Butler, PA, Mary Lou R. Barnhart of Greencastle; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Naomi E. Noel of Baltimore, MD, Martha C. Flook of Myersville, MD, Esther L. Barton of Hagerstown, MD; two sisters-in-law, Rubye Ludy of Huntingdon, PA and Joyce Ludy of Dayton, MD; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant brother Paul A. Ludy, brothers, Cyrus K. Ludy, Thomas M. Ludy, Lloyd Clarence Ludy; two sisters, Mary R. Younkers, Rachael J. Kershner, a great-granddaughter Hope A. McKinnis and a son-in-law Steven N. Barnhart.

A Celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the Greencastle Presbyterian Church 57 West Baltimore Street,  Greencastle.  Burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery will be private. There will be no public viewing but the family will receive friends onTuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ruth L. Rinehart Scholarship Fund, c/o F&M Bank, 518 North Antrim Way, Greencastle, PA  17225.
