James J. Smith, age 91 of Fort Myers, Florida and formerly of East Madison St. Greencastle, PA died at 1:00 AM Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the home of his son in State Line, PA.

Born July 29, 1925 near Mercersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Omar L. and Edna (Beck) Smith. He was married for 61 years to his wife Thelma Elizabeth (Reeder) “Babe” Smith who died on January 13, 2010.

Jim founded on April 1, 1946 the former James J. Smith & Sons Inc. painting company of Greencastle and was a lifelong painter.He was a 1943 graduate of Greencastle High School and was a US Navy veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific.

Jim was a 66 year member of the Fort Loudon American Legion Post #606 and a 65 year member of the Mercersburg American Legion Post # 517, life member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed going out on his boat in Florida.

Surviving family are three children Jerry L. Smith and wife Rosanna of Greencastle, James G. Smith and wife Roxanne of State Line, PA, Sharon Ann Tosten and husband Roger of Greencastle, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, one brother Clifford A. Smith of Mercersburg and former daughter-in-law Greta Smith of Marion.

There will be a memorial service held on Saturday, February 18 at 1:00 PM at the Otterbein United Brethren Church 146 Leitersburg St. Greencastle with Pastor David Rawley officiating. Military Honors will be provided at the beginning of the service by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be given in his memory to the SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice 2700 Luther Dr. Chambersburg, PA 17202.
