Col. Harry M. Stephey Sr., USAF, Ret.

Col. Harry M. Stephey, Sr., USAF, Ret., age 98, passed away on March 25, 2017.  Born in Waynecastle, Pa, on June 30, 1918, he was the son of the late Luther W. Stephey and Ada (Morgal) Stephey. 

Harry was married for 70 years to the love of his life, Betsy Scott Stephey, until her passing in 2013. They raised four sons, Harry Jr. (wife, Eileen) of Havertown, Pa., Larry (wife, Darlene) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Gary (wife, Candy) of Bracebridge, Ontario, and David (wife, Beth), of Chambersburg, Pa.

After graduation from Greencastle High School, Harry earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Drexel University in 1941.  He received his pilot wings from Brooks Field Flying School in 1942 and went on to fly B-24 bombers in combat during WWII.

Harry served as Commanding Officer of the 853rd Bombardment Squadron of the Eighth Air Force. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters for his participation in seven air campaigns over Europe. 

His civilian career in Marketing included Philco Corp, GE, Airborne Instruments Laboratory, Sperry Gyroscope, and McDonnell-Douglas.  He owned Greencastle Sportsworld from 1973 until his retirement in 1993.

Harry was a founding member of Greencastle Calvary Bible Church and a 32nd Degree Mason.  He was President of the Greencastle School Board and helped in the design and building of the Greencastle Elementary School.

In addition to his sons, Harry is survived by a sister, Martha Lee Ferry, 8 grand-children, and 12 great-grandchildren.  Another sister, Jean Maun, predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at The Chapel at Penn Hall, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA.  Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle with graveside military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund at the same address.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com.
